School of Computing and Informatics Students compete in the International Space Apps Challenge

The international space apps challenge is a event sponsored by NASA in 15 countries round the world NASA Space Apps Challenge

In this challenge, teams were competing to create and invent ground-breaking hard/software solutions that might be applicable to NASA's terrestrial and interplanetary activities. The University of Nairobi was represented by a team of two students from School of Computing and Informatics and one from School of Engineering. The team won second prize in the national competition. The team is now competing in the international category meaning they are pitching their skills against the World's best in the international finals. The team developed 'BitHarvester' an sms-based remote data acquisition and control system for remote renewable energy installations.

Rice University Business Plan Competition (Catherine Mahugu)

Catherine Mahugu, fourth BSc in Computer Science student, participated in
the Rice University Business Plan competition that was hosted and organized by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, a Rice University flagship initiative devoted to the support of entrepreneurship that took place on 12-14 April 2012 at Houston, Texas, USA. The Rice University
Business Plan Competition is the world $B!G (Bs richest and largest graduate-level business plan competition.

Catherine and her teammate, Ella Peinovich, an MIT graduate student
submitted a product name SasaAfrica, a women $B!> (Bowned and operated,social enterprise that offers an innovative and independent platform for women artisans and entrepreneurs in Africa to create micro-enterprises, connecting developing world vendors to global e-commerce, even if they do not have access to the Internet, a computer, or a bank account, reaching even the most remote communities of entrepreneurs. Catherine was sponsored by the CBPS and SCI.

Global Entrepreneurship Competition (Catherine Mahugu)

Catherine Mahugu, Fourth Year BSc in Computer Science, School of Computing and Informatics,  and her and teammate Ella Peinovich, an MIT graduatestudent have won the Global Entrepreneurship Competition - Technology Prize
worth $10,000.

COLLEGE OF BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES FISH FARM LAUNCH

The College of biological and physical Sciences launched their fish farm on the 2nd of March 2012. The occasion was graced by members of staff from various Schools within the campus and the Guest of honour was Prof Micheni .J. Ntiba, P.S Ministry for Fisheries Development, also a distinguished member of staff

Short Course In Solar Photovoltaic Installation And Maintanance (solar Academy)

The Department of Physics in conjuction with the Solar Energy Research Group invites applicants for shortcourses in solar photovoltaic installation and maintenance, which will take place at the Department of Physics, Choiromo Campus, University of Nairobi in April 2012. Application form is in the Related File attached.

SCOPE OF TRAINING:

The training will cover
  • Basics of solar electricity
  • Site survey and sizing
  • Solar appliances
  • Installation
  • System maintenance (panel, battery and appliances)
  • Solar to grid  electricity generation

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE OF ICT EQUIPMENTS

The ICT Team has schedule to carry out preventive Maintenance of ICT Equipments.

The Offices will be serviced during the week whereas the Computer Laboratories and Network Equipments will  be serviced over weekends for minimum disruption of ICT services.

Prof. Bernard O. Aduda is the new Principal, for the College of Biological and Physical Sciences, effective from March 1st 2011. This announcement was made on Friday 25th February 2011 by the outgoing Principal, Prof. Lucy Irungu (DVC – Research, Production & Extension) during a C.B.P.S. staff bonding luncheon.

Dr. Lilian Wambua of SBS wins 2011 AWARD Fellowship

 

Dr. Lilian Wambua of the School of Biological Sciences, University of Nairobi has been selected as a 2011 Award Fellow.

AWARD is a professional development program that strenghtnes the research and leadership skills of African women in agricultural science, empowering them to contribute more effectively to poverty alleviation and food security in sub-sharan Africa.

45TH GRADUATION CEREMONY PUBLICITY ACTIVITIES

The University of Nairobi will be hosting its 45th Graduation Ceremony on Friday 9th September 2011, from 9.00 a.m at the Chancellor’s Court. This ceremony will feature 4500 graduands from the colleges of: Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Architecture and Engineering; Biological and Physical Sciences and Education and External Studies.
