Sports Captains in Chiromo Campus with trophies won during University of Nairobi's 2018 Annual Sports Day

Games captains in the College officially handed over seven trophies won in the coveted Annual Sports day held at the University of Nairobi on February 28, 2018. A first of its kind, the University has consistently held tournaments within and outside campus, with students and staff represented in regional and international games over the past years, but this year, the University commenced a tradition that will repeatedly be held to esteem the physical skills and talents of staff and students, at the Annual Sports Day.

As the trophies were being handed over, Mr. Samuel Maloba who is the Volleyball Captain, said that the College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS) also known as Chiromo campus, has great representation in the University sports teams. “9 out of 12 volleyball team members come from Chiromo, bragged Samuel- a third year Chemistry student.

The trophies were officially handed over by the Games tutor CBPS, Ms. Judith Kinoti, to the College Principal, Prof. Bernard Aduda, on March 22, 2018.

CBPS took an overall position 3 during the Annual Sports day amongst the six Colleges in the University as well as the Central Department. Position one went to College of Health Sciences, while position two was College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The theme of 2018 Annual Sports day was “Enhancing cohesiveness and wellness through sports.”

Additionally, CBPS obtained the following trophies during the Sports day:

  • Overall 2nd runners up
  • Students overall 2nd runners up
  • Chess women winners
  • Handball men winners
  • Hockey men winners
  • Table tennis winners
  • Volleyball women winners
  • Chess men 1st runners up
  • Volleyball men 2nd runners up
  • Hockey women 2nd runners up

“Games are rewarding. Many people have succeeded because of games,” noted Prof. Aduda, principal, CBPS. “Right now, you can express and exploit your talent compared to the era where parents insisted on books and books alone as a measure of excelling,” added Prof. Aduda. The principal congratulated the teams for triumphing in the games and bringing the trophies to the College. The don challenged the captains to maintain the tempo and to bring in more trophies in continuous tournaments that will be happening in the year.

Ms. Kinoti praised the teams for the effort they put in during the sports day, noting “CBPS attained 11 gold medals, while the next College following this remarkable achievement had only 6 gold medals. This shows our great performance during the Annual Sports day.”

The captain volleyball team was joined with other captains and games representatives from soccer, volleyball, table tennis, hockey, handball, swimming and basketball teams.

These were Eunice Mutinda (volleyball), Oliver Adera (soccer), Paul Towett (table tennis), Humphrey Ukhebi (hockey), Timothy Kiplimo (handball), Griffin Gichora (swimming) and Nathaniel Mwanza (basketball).
