The Chiromo environmental awareness club is a professional club within the school of Biological sciences in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences (Chiromo campus) which is one of the six colleges in the University of Nairobi that endeavors to create a positive appreciation of the environment among the student community and the society as a whole.
Among its core activities, the club usually organizes an annual charity visit to a Children’s home, to spend time with the less privileged members of our society. This activity is an opportunity to share the importance of the environment and reasons why we should sustainably nurture it.
Therefore, on the 9th of February the club visited Christ and Children Home and Rehabilitation Centre based in Kongo, Kahawa West, in Kasarani. It was founded in 2001 by Brother Charles Njani who was touched by the situation that the street children in his area were undergoing. The vision of the Centre is to see children enjoy their rights and benefits as stipulated in the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC) and children’s act so that they can lead a better life with adequate food nutrition, shelter, clothing and uninterrupted schooling, moral uprightness and legal protection. This is a vision that C.E.A.C and other donors hope to make a reality. The Centre is currently home to 30 children (18 boys and 12 girls) and there is need of assistance from individuals, churches, co-operative bodies, student groups among others so as to help better the lives of these children. It is to this effect, that the Club visited the centre.
In order to make this day a success the Club prepared Approach Cards which were sold to members of Staff of the University of Nairobi as well as several individuals from various institutions. Through this initiative the club was able to raise Ksh. 20,000/=. This money was used to buy food stuffs, washing detergents, stationery, sandals, vegetable seedlings and tree seedlings. Also clothes and shoes were donated by members of the club.
