Moana Research Station was bought by Prof. William Edwin Isaac, a marine biologist and Chair, Department of Botany from 1961 to1970, using research funds from British government for research in marine sciences. The Station is located on a 14 acre piece of land fronting the Indian Ocean in Diani South Coast, Kwale County only 5km from Ukunda town and approximately 43km from Mombasa.

The Research Station is a serene environment and over time has evolved to include offering of accommodation services not only to the marine researchers but also to the public at large. It has a number of accommodation facilities namely: The Hostel, The Cottage, The Banda and The Kitchen which also houses the Conference hall.
