Official opening ceremony of the Nairobi Innovation Week 2017 held at UoN Towers, Manu Chandaria Auditorium on March 8, 2017

The third annual Nairobi Innovation Week at the University of Nairobi has officially been opened by Cabinet Secretary, ICT, Joe Mucheru.

The week-long innovation forum themed Innovation to solve pressing local and global challenges brought together stakeholders from private and government sector.

Among participating organization representatives who made addresses during the official opening ceremony held on March 08, 2017 were Barclays, United Nations Child Education Fund (UNICEF), African Development Bank (AfDB) and Embassy of Finland.

Nairobi Innovation Week features innovation exhibitions, bootcamps, hackathons, workshops, seminars, panel discussions and concerts during the five day event from 6th-10th March 2017. The concluding day will constitute innovation startups pitching to stakeholders.

Cycling will now be a culture at the University of Nairobi following an official launch of the initiative dubbed Bike share. Bike share aims to enforce a healthy community through cycling, while seeking to provide a solution towards urban mobility challenges witnessed in congestion and heavy traffic caused by a great dependence on motorized transportation. 

The project which was launched on February 16, 2017 was graced by Nation Media’s Editor-in-Chief, Tom Mshindi and Bike share funding partner, UN-Habitat, represented by, Ms. Stefanie Holzwarth.

University of Nairobi, Main Campus

The University of Nairobi has joined the bigwigs by being among the top 20 leading universities in the number of content generated from its website in the Webometrics ranking January 2017 edition. The University emerged position 11 in the Presence parameter out of 19, 403 universities.

The University of Nairobi emerged best in the region in Google Scholar citations and position 921 in the world, with a total number of 43,471 citations. The leading University in the world on Google scholar citations is Harvard University with 1,495,497 citations.

University of Nairobi Towers and Fountain of Knowledge at the University of Nairobi, main campus

The University of Nairobi has been ranked position 8 in Africa and 775th  among 19,000 universities in the World, in the just released Webometrics ranking January 2017 edition.  The ranking coverage comprises 19,403 universities in the world and 398 African universities.

International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) is inviting applications for 2 PhD scholarships from Sub-Sahara Africa to work on Schitosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease funded by a research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). 

Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) website indicates that Schitosomiasis is caused by parasitic worms in fresh water. Human who come into contact with snails in fresh water already infected by these worms are at risk of death.

As 8,550 fresh graduates are released to the job market to enhance the country’s development, the University looked back in 2016 and revealed great milestones achieved in the leading University in the region and top 3% in Africa.

56 PhDs, 2477 Masters, 5177 Bachelors, 49 Postgraduate diplomas, 2 Fellowship awards & 1 Honorary doctorate  were conferred degrees and awarded diplomas at the 56th Graduation ceremony.

The graduation ceremony held on December 2, 2016 was presided over by the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

Among the University’s 2016 accomplishments revealed, include: completion of University of Nairobi Towers, which has changed Nairobi skyline, participation in Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) and chairing of UN University sustainable development program in Africa , increase in high impact research resulting to a research fund worth Ksh. 4.5 billion, admission to World research network – Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and UoN alumni increased to over 195,000.  

The 56th graduation also marked a farewell to Dr. Idle Farah whose term as University of Nairobi Council Chair ends in February 2017, having been appointed in February 2013.

During the graduation, the University was challenged to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEMS) courses which would fast-track achievement of developmental goals.
